Screening in conjunction with plastic enclosures
BOPLA can give you competent advice and assistance when you need to protect your electronics against external influences. We offer three methods to give you the required level of protection.
a) copper-chrome-nickel deposition
b) aluminium deposition
c) painting with conductive copper lacquer
Vacuum coating of aluminium enclosures
In these processes, the surfaces which are not to or must not be coated are covered by adhesive tape or masked.
For reasons of prompt delivery and cost, we recommend coating with conductive copper lacquer. However, when the costs are being calculated, it is necessary to take into consideration the costs relating to the regulations which apply to the disposal of electrical scrap. Please note that we are unable to take back enclosures which have been coated on the customer's instructions.
Aluminium vacuum coating takes place using high-vacuum equipment. Parts coated using this method can be recycled at relatively low cost. Additional advantages are an even coating thickness and the reproducibility of the coating. We use a coating thickness of at least 2.5 mm as standard. Increased thickness is always available on request, if required, depending on the material used for the enclosure.
The mechanical characteristics do not change as a result of the process, so there is no risk of the material becoming brittle or of crack formation.
Coating masks are now available for a large number of our standard enclosures, which means that this method of screening can be offered at very low cost.
In all those cases in which the above-mentioned processes do not provide adequate screening, the fitting of contacting seals can provide additional screening protection. If necessary because of your requirements and the type of enclosure, we can recommend or specify, and supply, such special seals.
If components, modules or the complete electronics are at risk of being affected by any kind of interference, an additional and effective method of screening involves equipping such parts with an internal metal encapsulation. An increase in the level of screening protection can also be achieved with such a metal enclosure by means of the methods described above.
To complete the EMC protection measures, the cable inlets can be supplied with suitable plastic or metal cable glands with the possibility of attaching the cable screening to the enclosure earthing connection.
If you require further details of the damping values for different BOPLA enclosures with the relevant screening measures, please ask for a copy of our special EMC information sheet.
